Insulation & ventilation!
Heat escaping from the home is a common reason for roof melt. Using insulation with a high R-value will reduce the heat moving from the ceiling to the insulation and warming the roof deck.
Heat may be reaching your attic in various ways. Light fixtures( very common problem), exhaust systems( bathrooms & kitchens) and chimneys are areas to look at if ice damming is occurring.
Proper roof ventilation can help maintain uniform roof temperatures. If areas of heat loss are substantially reduced, roof ventilation becomes less important. (for ice dams)
WHY SHOULD I REMOVE SNOW FROM MY ROOF?
Although snow on your roof can be damaging, there are some benefits to leaving the snow there. A thin layer of snow can offer some insulation to your home which can help your heating bill!

The weight of snow is different depending on the depth and water content, An inch of ice is equal to a foot of fresh snow.
2) Low pitched or flat roofs
These roof tend to accumulate more snow and/or drifts
3) Your home is making noises.
Creaking, cracking, popping and other odd noises could signal that the snow on your roof is too heavy.
4) Ice dams
When snow melts & refreezes at the edge of your roof, ice dams can occur. They cause water to infiltrate your home causing untold damage.
5) Damage in your home
Water spots, cracking drywall & sticking doors are all signs that your roof may have too heavy a snow load.
